This accommodation is more affordable than some Colleges. Also you can still participate in your College Activities and have some extra ones here.

Overall, I have really enjoyed living here. The management staff are very kind, supportive, and responsive, which makes the living experience much better. The accommodation itself is comfortable and well managed. The only downside is that the location is a little remote, and there are sometimes some suspicious people in the surrounding area.

Are there any support services available for international students in Durham?

Durham offers a wide range of support services for international students through Durham University, student organisations and national charities.

Durham University provides dedicated international student support teams who can help with visas, settling into the UK, finances and wellbeing throughout your studies.

Students can also access orientation programmes, welcome events and ongoing support designed to help them adjust to life in Durham and the UK. Guidance is often available on topics such as academic expectations, culture shock and practical tasks like opening a bank account or registering with a doctor.

Durham has a large international student community, with students from around the world taking part in university colleges, societies and student-led activities across the city.

In addition, organisations such as UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) provide independent advice on immigration, employment and studying in the UK.

How easy is it to get around Durham as a student?

Getting around Durham is relatively easy thanks to the city’s compact size. Many students can walk between accommodation, colleges, lecture buildings and the city centre, often without needing to take public transport daily.

The city’s hilly streets and older layout can make some journeys more physically demanding, particularly around the cathedral and Bailey areas, but most university facilities remain within walking distance.

Durham Railway Station provides direct rail links to cities such as Newcastle, Leeds and London, making it easy for students to travel home or explore other parts of the UK.

For most students, daily life in Durham revolves around walking between university buildings, social spaces and accommodation throughout the city.

How much does student accommodation in Durham cost?

The cost of student accommodation in Durham varies depending on the type of room, location and facilities. On average, students can expect to pay between £130 and £280 per week, with shared student houses generally costing less than studios or premium accommodation.

Accommodation close to Durham University and the city centre is often in high demand, particularly because of the city’s compact layout and large student population.

Private student accommodation may cost more than traditional shared housing, but it often includes bills, Wi-Fi and maintenance, helping students manage monthly costs more easily throughout the academic year.

What’s student life like in Durham?

Student life in Durham is strongly shaped by the university’s college-based system and the city’s close-knit atmosphere. Unlike larger university cities, Durham has a more community-focused student experience where much of university life revolves around colleges, societies and traditions.

Many students spend their time moving between lectures, libraries, college events and social spaces within the city centre. Popular areas such as Elvet Bridge, Saddler Street and the riverside are central to student social life, with pubs, cafés and restaurants regularly filled with Durham students.

Durham is also known for its traditions and formal events, including college formals, balls and society activities, which play a major role in the university experience for many students.

At the same time, the city’s historic setting, green spaces and riverside walks give Durham a quieter and more academic feel compared to larger UK cities, helping students balance studying with social life and wellbeing.

Where do most students live in Durham?

Many students in Durham live close to the university and city centre, where colleges, lecture buildings and social spaces are all within walking distance.

Popular student areas include:

  • The Bailey: one of the most historic student areas, closely connected to Durham colleges

  • Neville’s Cross: popular for student housing and access to university buildings

  • Gilesgate: a common area for student accommodation with good links to the city centre

  • Viaduct area: known for its student houses and proximity to nightlife and university facilities

Because Durham is relatively compact, students often choose accommodation based on how easily they can walk between lectures, colleges and social spaces.
