Home to both Newcastle University and Northumbria University, Newcastle has a large student community spread across the city. As the “smallest big city” in the UK, students can experience the convenience of fast-paced city life with a community feel in this popular North East city.

This guide will summarise what students can expect from living in Newcastle; including things to do, popular nightlife spots, and which Newcastle student areas have the best amenities.

What are the best things to do in Newcastle as a student?

Known for its picturesque views and iconic sights, such as the River Tyne, Newcastle Cathedral, and Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Newcastle has an array of things to do around the city. Home to Newcastle United football club, St James Park is the 8th largest football stadium in England and seats just over 52,000.

Consider exploring Newcastle in a completely unique way. The Victoria Tunnel is a preserved 19th-century wagonway that runs beneath the city; from Town Moor to the River Tyne. Also of cultural importance, there is The Biscuit Factory, which is a large contemporary art gallery, and Newcastle Lit and Phil Society; the largest library in the UK outside of London.

Built as a newsreel theatre in the 1930s, Tyneside Cinema has maintained a niche selection of British and international films; compared to other larger cinema chains.

Does Newcastle have a good nightlife?

Pop culture programmes, such as Geordie Shore, have established Newcastle city centre as having a vibrant nightlife, and feature all types of nightclubs and pubs throughout the North East city. There are a variety of student nights for every day of the week, with cheaper drink deals and late-night events. The Tyne Bar has a free jukebox and a beer garden sheltered underneath a bridge at the mouth of the Ouseburn River and the River Tyne.

Several prohibition bars in Newcastle are hidden from the general public. This includes Blues & Bourbon, nestled beneath Grainger Market, and The Exchange, which has a concealed entrance through a red telephone box. For late nights, there is Madame Koo, which provides a speakeasy feel with hidden caves and tunnels throughout its décor.

Newcastle is a popular stag and hen party location, with nightclubs such as Tup Tup Palace and Bijoux open to the early morning hours.

What area in Newcastle has the best amenities?

Local amenities, such as supermarkets, places of interest, and university resources, may be necessary for day-to-day life as a student, and should be considered when choosing accommodation. Popular Newcastle student areas include the city centre, and Jesmond.

Ouseburn has become Newcastle’s cultural quarter, and is a vibrant community for artists, designers, musicians and students. Ouseburn is close to both universities and within walking distance of Newcastle Central Station and the city centre.

Newcastle Quayside has also been transformed into a vibrant area popular with students. The once-commercial dock is in proximity to a variety of supermarkets, including a Tesco Extra and a Sunday Market.
