Why Choose Private Student Accommodation in Dundee?

Choosing where to live is a big part of your university experience, especially in a city like Dundee where students often choose between traditional shared flats and modern student accommodation close to campus.

Many students in Dundee live in shared student houses or flats around the city centre and university areas. While these can offer flexibility and independence, they also often come with responsibilities such as organising bills, arranging maintenance and managing household admin with housemates.

Private student accommodation offers a more structured and convenient alternative. Rooms are fully furnished and ready to move into, with bills, Wi-Fi and maintenance included, helping to simplify day-to-day life.

This can be particularly valuable in Dundee, where many students balance academic work with part-time jobs, university societies and social activities across the city. Having secure, professionally managed accommodation close to campus can make it easier to focus on your studies while still enjoying student life.

Private accommodation also gives you flexibility, whether you prefer the privacy of a studio or a more social environment with communal spaces and shared facilities. With secure buildings and on-site support teams, it’s a comfortable and reliable option throughout the academic year.

What Students Say About Mansion Student

Students choose Mansion Student for comfortable accommodation, supportive on-site teams and a welcoming student community.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Perfect accommodation! I would recommend it to anyone! It has many options of room type so it’s great for those who want to make a choice on the type of room they would like to occupy.

Overall it's good for what you pay but I found that the communal areas are in serious need of repair and there was lots of damages and issues that had to be reported and are still being reported. Also the laundry room is a disgrace. 3 washing machines for 40+ flats and it's mildly and dirty. The property managers are great tho and so happy to help and approachable.

Everything is great except the warmer. It temporarily stops working.

Lots of fire alarm test, which seems unnecessary. Maintenance is kind and timely.

What's Nearby?

Student life in Dundee is closely connected to the city centre and waterfront area. Unlike larger university cities where campuses and accommodation can feel spread out, Dundee’s compact layout means students can often walk between lectures, accommodation and social spaces in just a few minutes.

The University of Dundee and Abertay University are both located close to the city centre, making the surrounding areas popular with students throughout the academic year.

Students regularly spend time around:

  • Perth Road: one of Dundee’s best-known student areas, filled with cafés, pubs and independent restaurants

  • City Quay and the waterfront: popular for walks, cafés and views across the River Tay

  • The McManus and Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA): key cultural spots in the city

  • Magdalen Green: a popular green space for students during warmer months

Dundee also has a growing reputation for creativity and digital industries, helped by the city’s connection to gaming and design through Abertay University.

Where do most students live in Dundee?

Many students in Dundee live close to the universities and city centre, where accommodation, lectures and social spaces are all within easy reach.

Areas around Perth Road and the West End are particularly popular with students due to their proximity to the University of Dundee, cafés, bars and independent shops.

Because Dundee is relatively compact, students often choose accommodation based on convenience and walkability rather than needing to commute long distances.

What’s student life like in Dundee?

Student life in Dundee is shaped by the city’s close-knit atmosphere, compact layout and strong university community. Unlike larger cities, Dundee offers a more relaxed and manageable student experience where much of daily life happens within a small area.

Students spend time socialising around Perth Road and the city centre, with popular pubs, cafés and restaurants located close to the universities. Venues across the city host regular student nights, live music and events throughout the academic year.

Dundee is also known for its creative and cultural scene, particularly around Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), independent galleries and the waterfront redevelopment. The city has a strong connection to gaming and digital industries, with Abertay University especially recognised for courses linked to game design and technology.

At the same time, Dundee’s waterfront and green spaces give students opportunities to relax outside of lectures, helping create a balanced student lifestyle.

How much does student accommodation in Dundee cost?

The cost of student accommodation in Dundee varies depending on the type of room, location and facilities. On average, students can expect to pay between £100 and £220 per week, with shared student flats typically costing less than studios or premium accommodation.

Compared to many larger UK cities, Dundee is often considered more affordable for students, particularly when it comes to rent and day-to-day living costs.

Private student accommodation may cost more than traditional shared housing, but it often includes bills, Wi-Fi and maintenance, helping students manage monthly costs more easily.

How easy is it to get around Dundee as a student?

Getting around Dundee is relatively easy thanks to the city’s compact size. Many students can walk between accommodation, university buildings and the city centre, particularly those living close to Perth Road, the West End or central Dundee.

The city also has regular bus services connecting surrounding areas, while Dundee Railway Station provides direct rail links to cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

For most students, daily life in Dundee involves short walking distances between lectures, social spaces and accommodation, making it one of the UK’s more manageable student cities to navigate.

Are there any support services available for international students in Dundee?

Dundee offers a wide range of support services for international students through its universities, student organisations and national charities.

Universities such as the University of Dundee and Abertay University provide dedicated international support teams who can help with visas, settling into the UK, finances and wellbeing throughout your studies.

Students can also access orientation programmes, welcome events and ongoing support designed to help them adjust to life in Dundee and the UK. Guidance is often available on topics such as academic expectations, culture shock and practical tasks like opening a bank account or registering with a doctor.

Dundee has a welcoming international student community, with universities hosting a wide range of cultural societies and student-led groups that help students meet others and feel part of university life.

In addition, organisations such as UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) provide independent advice on immigration, employment and studying in the UK.
