Edinburgh offers a different student experience to most UK university cities. As Scotland’s capital, it combines historic architecture, major cultural events and a large student population spread across different parts of the city.

Students in Edinburgh often balance university life with living in a busy capital city, where lectures, social spaces and accommodation can be spread across different neighbourhoods. Areas like Old Town, Newington, Marchmont and Bruntsfield are particularly popular with students due to their proximity to the University of Edinburgh and strong student atmosphere, while students from Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University also live across the city.

Our student accommodation in Edinburgh is designed to make city living more manageable, with easy access to university buildings, public transport and key student areas.

At Mansion Student, you’ll find stylish student studios and two-bed apartments with all-inclusive bills, high-speed Wi-Fi and supportive on-site teams who are always ready to help.

Why Choose Private Student Accommodation in Edinburgh?

Choosing where to live is a big part of your university experience, especially in a city like Edinburgh where demand for student housing is high and accommodation is spread across different areas.

Many students in Edinburgh live in traditional shared flats or student houses, particularly in neighbourhoods such as Marchmont and Newington. While these can offer a strong student community, they often come with added responsibilities such as organising bills, arranging maintenance and managing household admin.

Private student accommodation offers a more structured and convenient alternative. Rooms are fully furnished and ready to move into, with bills, Wi-Fi and maintenance included, helping to simplify everyday student life in a busy city.

This can be particularly valuable in Edinburgh, where students can often spend time travelling between university buildings, accommodation and different parts of the city throughout the week. Having secure, well-located accommodation makes it easier to balance studying, socialising and daily routines.

Private accommodation also gives you flexibility, whether you prefer independent living in a studio or a more social environment with shared spaces and communal areas. With secure buildings and on-site support teams, it’s a comfortable and reliable option throughout the academic year.

What Students Say About Mansion Student

Students choose Mansion Student for comfortable accommodation, supportive on-site teams and a welcoming student community.

Rated 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my second year living in Goods corner, and everything has been great so far. The building’s location is amazing(2 minute walk from cameron toll and 5 minute walk from king campus), with plenty of bus stops nearby. The facilities are very well maintained, and the rooms are spacious, although I did find storage space to be slightly lacking. Everyone at reception is lovely, always available to help, or just for a chat. Overall, I strongly recommend goods corner, and I am yet to have any complaints at all.

The location is perfect if you go to classes in kb, and it’s close to Cameron toll which makes it super convenient for grocery shopping. The staffs are nice and reliable. Definitely worth the price.

Overall my experience here was not the best to say the least, my room location is so exposed to the window so I can never have privacy, also I had an issue with one of the staff members who entered my room using a master key without my permission which was a breach of the contract but nothing was done about it they just didn't acknowledge it, overall from my experience the accommodation does not respect your privacy and its ok with them to use the key to enter without your permission.

I’ve had a great experience living at Goods Corner! The staff are always friendly, welcoming, and very helpful. The facilities are excellent, everything is clean, modern, and well-maintained. The common areas are comfortable and create a real sense of community. It’s a perfect place for students, and I truly appreciate how the team always tries to make our stay better. Highly recommended!

What's Nearby?

Student community in Edinburgh is shaped by the city itself. Unlike more campus-focused university locations, students spend much of their time moving between university buildings, cafés, libraries and social spaces across different parts of the city.

Areas such as Old Town, Newington and Bruntsfield are central to student life, offering a mix of independent cafés, restaurants, pubs and study spots. Many students also spend time around George Square, one of the main student hubs for the University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s cultural scene is another major part of the university experience. Events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Hogmanay celebrations and year-round live music and arts events make the city feel busy and active throughout the year.

Students also benefit from access to outdoor spaces and viewpoints, including The Meadows, Arthur’s Seat and Holyrood Park, which are popular places to relax, exercise and socialise.

Living in Edinburgh gives you access to both a world-famous city and a strong student community, creating a university experience that extends far beyond campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do most students live in Edinburgh?

Students in Edinburgh typically live in areas close to the University of Edinburgh and the city centre.

Popular student neighbourhoods include:

  • Newington: one of the city’s most established student areas

  • Marchmont: known for traditional tenement flats and proximity to The Meadows

  • Bruntsfield: popular for cafés, independent shops and a quieter atmosphere

  • Old Town: centrally located and close to university buildings

Many students choose accommodation based on how easy it is to walk between lectures, libraries and social spaces, as much of student life in Edinburgh takes place across the city rather than on a single campus.

What’s student life like in Edinburgh?

Student life in Edinburgh combines studying in a historic capital city with being part of a large and active student community. The city has a very different atmosphere to many UK university towns, with students living alongside major cultural events, tourism and year-round city life.

Much of student life centres around the University of Edinburgh’s George Square area, as well as neighbourhoods like Newington and Marchmont. Students spend time studying in cafés, socialising in pubs and exploring the city’s restaurants, independent shops and cultural venues.

Edinburgh is also known for its arts and festival scene. Events such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival transform the city each summer, while venues around the city host live music, comedy and theatre throughout the year.

At the same time, Edinburgh offers plenty of green space and outdoor activities. Areas such as The Meadows, Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill are popular with students looking to relax outside of lectures.

Overall, student life in Edinburgh offers a balance between academic focus, city living and cultural experiences that’s difficult to find elsewhere in the UK.

How much does student accommodation in Edinburgh cost?

The cost of student accommodation in Edinburgh varies depending on the type of room, location and facilities. On average, students can expect to pay between £180 and £350 per week, with accommodation in central areas typically costing more than locations further outside the city centre.

Edinburgh is one of the UK’s more expensive student cities, particularly in areas close to the University of Edinburgh and the city centre. While shared student flats can sometimes offer lower monthly rent, private student accommodation often includes bills, Wi-Fi and maintenance, helping students manage costs more easily throughout the academic year.

How easy is it to get around Edinburgh as a student?

Getting around Edinburgh is relatively straightforward thanks to the city’s compact centre and strong public transport network.

Many students can walk between university buildings, accommodation and the city centre, particularly in areas around Newington, Marchmont and George Square. The city is also well connected by buses and trams, making it easy to travel across Edinburgh without needing a car.

Edinburgh Waverley Station provides direct rail links to cities such as Glasgow, Newcastle and London, while Edinburgh Airport is easily accessible by tram and bus.

Although Edinburgh is very walkable, the city’s steep streets and hilly layout can make some journeys more physically demanding, particularly in older parts of the city.

Are there any support services available for international students in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh offers a wide range of support services for international students through its universities, student organisations and national charities.

Universities such as the University of Edinburgh provide dedicated international student support teams who can help with visas, settling into the UK, finances and wellbeing throughout your studies.

Students can also access orientation programmes, welcome events and ongoing support designed to help them to adjust to life in Edinburgh and the UK. Guidance is often available on topics such as academic expectations, culture shock and practical day-to-day tasks like registering with a doctor or opening a bank account.

Edinburgh has a large international student population, with students from across the world studying and living throughout the city. Universities also host a wide range of cultural societies and student-led groups, helping international students meet others and feel part of university life on campus and across the city.

In addition, organisations such as UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) provide independent advice on immigration, employment and studying in the UK.
